There’s still time to join us in Carrington!

Our Spring Rally and luncheon kicks off tomorrow at the City Campground in Carrington in central North Dakota.  We’ll head out for a tour of the Carrington Research Extension Center at 1:30 pm.  Saturday, there are garage sales city-wide to put a little adventure in the morning.  At Noon we will meet at the Chieftain Motel for our spring luncheon and business meeting.  Afterwards, we will head out to Dakota Sun Gardens and Winery for a pre-Happy Hour sample of local wines.  Saturday will be a “grill your own” and bring a side dish to share for an evening of good conversation, great food and plans for our summer adventure.  There’s still time to join us – don’t forget to bring some warmer clothing, the weather forecast is not going to be too generous with Spring warmth.

Unit Founding Member passes away

We are sorry to report that one of the Peace Garden Unit’s founding members has passed away after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s. Some of you may not remember him, but Robert Detlaff was a walking source of knowledge and skill.  He was a talented woodworker, hard-working farmer and an avid birder – from him I learned how to spot a tiny finch in flight just by their scalloped dance across the sky.  He and his wife Shirley were so welcoming and gracious to us at our very first unit rally.  Robert was a past unit president and served as the presiding officer at the 2007 Fall Installation Rally.  His Airstream was a masterpiece of woodwork – at first glance you could tell he took great pride in his trailer – his love affair with camping spanned decades and his family was often helping with and sharing in the festivities.

Robert was 89 years young and passed away in a Minot healthcare facility. Funeral Service are 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Minot. Visitation: Friday, April 7, 2017 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot. In lieu of flowers and plants please consider sending a memorial donation to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, ND Alzheimer’s Association or to an organization of your choice.  To read his complete obituary, go to:  http://www.thomasfamilyfuneralhome.com/obituaries

Winter has arrived

The east half of the state was reintroduced to Old Man Winter just before Thanksgiving, and now it’s the western half of the state’s turn.  While there are blades of grass peaking though, more is covered with snow drifts butt-deep.  For those of you with such challenges, remember there is no place the you REALLY have to be today, right? Also, take it easy with the snow shovel – better yet – pay someone else to do it. Money well spent.  Will the snow last?  Will we get more? The almanac suggests a white winter – hopefully it is wrong about the below normal temperatures.  Wherever this season finds you, stay safe and warm and best wishes for a joyous holiday season!

Lewisburg Int’l Rally kicks off June 28 near flood devastation

Lewisburg, WV, the site of this year’s International Rally & Convention, is just up the river from White Sulfur Springs where the devastating floods have claimed 24 lives so far, and destroyed many homes.  Electricity and fresh water has been a challenge since storms dumped 10 inches of rain in the area. They are not out of the woods yet, as Flash Flood Watches are posted with more rain in the forecast. Stay safe.

Just a few weeks to go!

Listening to the rain pouring down on the parched landscape, I think Spring has finally arrived.  Hope Art’s place isn’t getting the deluge we are.  The latest issue of our unit newsletter, the Prairie Rose has been sent out.   In it you will find details on the upcoming Spring Luncheon and Campout at Art’s Place May 5 – 8, with the Luncheon on Saturday May 7 at Noon at the Pizza Ranch in Casselton, ND.  Also in this issue are details for the Summer Buddy Rally at the Hawk Museum Festival in Wolford, ND June 9 – 12.  To view or download this issue, click Prairie Rose Newsletter – May-June 2016

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE – if you are planning to attend the Region 7 Monument of Peace Special Events Rally or the Dedication Ceremony, you will need to clear US/Canada Customs to gain access to the International Peace Gardens, as the Park straddles the Border.  You will need ONE of the following: (1) Current Valid US Passport Booklet or Passport Card, OR;  (2)  Official Birth Certificate and two (2) forms of identification.  According to the Peace Garden website, “When you drive pass the  Canadian or USA Port of Entry and enter the International Peace Garden,  you have left either the United States or Canada.  To re-enter, Border Services Officers must record information from all identification documents you present.  Passports are not mandatory, but are the only form that can be scanned quickly and efficiently. Passports help reduce wait times and contribute to a smooth border crossing.”

BOTTOM LINE:  You have time to apply for or renew your passport, but you need to do it NOW.
